Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, 2026. For prompts up to 100k tokens it costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Anthropic says that is about 75% less on average than Haiku 4.5.

What changed

  • Prompts over 100k tokens are priced at $0.50 input and $2.50 output per million tokens.
  • Cache reads cost $0.01 per million tokens for prompts up to 100k. Haiku 4.5 listed $1.00 input, $5.00 output and $0.10 cache reads.
  • It is the first Haiku-class model with an adjustable effort setting.
  • Anthropic's page reports 72.4% on OSWorld 2.1 (offline subset) against 15.7% for Haiku 4.5, and 39.2% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 against 0.0%.
  • It is available on the Claude Platform as claude-haiku-5-5, and on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
  • An updated tokenizer means it uses slightly more tokens per task.

Why it matters

Cheap, fast models decide whether an AI feature has a sane margin. Summaries, classification and support replies run in volume, and a 75% price drop changes which of them are worth shipping. The tokenizer note matters too: the real saving on your workload will be a bit smaller than the list-price gap.

What to do now

  • Replay a week of your own traffic through claude-haiku-5-5 and compare cost per finished task, not cost per token.
  • Try the lower effort settings on high-volume jobs first.
