- PASS FoundDeclared in robots.txt
- PASS Sitemap index3 child sitemaps, 1,240 URLs
- WARNING Sample2 of 10 URLs redirect
- ISSUE Sample1 of 10 URLs returns 404
What does the free Sitemap Finder & Validator analyze?
-
1
Finding the sitemap
Sitemap lines in robots.txt first, then the usual addresses such as /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml.
-
2
Declared in robots.txt
A Sitemap line in robots.txt helps every crawler find it, not only the ones you submit it to.
-
3
Reachable and valid
Whether the file answers 200 and parses as a sitemap or a sitemap index.
-
4
Sitemap indexes
Child sitemaps are opened too — up to a few of each, so large sites stay quick to check.
-
5
A sample of URLs
Ten listed URLs are requested: a sitemap should list final pages that answer 200, not redirects or errors.
-
6
Size limits
Very large files are read in part, and the report says so.
How to keep a sitemap useful
-
1
List only final URLs
Pages that answer 200 and are canonical — no redirects, errors or noindex pages. Redirect & HTTP Header Checker →
-
2
Declare it in robots.txt
Add a Sitemap line with the full https:// address. Robots.txt Tester →
-
3
Split large sites
Up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB per file; use a sitemap index above that.
-
4
Keep it fresh
Generate it from your site, so new pages appear and removed ones disappear.
-
5
Submit it in Search Console
Then you see how many listed pages Google indexed.
How to interpret your results
- ISSUE
- A clear fault that usually deserves a fix, e.g. a missing title or a non-200 status.
- WARNING
- May be a problem depending on the page, e.g. a missing description or canonical, or a long title.
- PASS
- Checked and looks fine.
- NOT CHECKED
- Not part of this check, or blocked by the site. The report says which — it is never counted as a fault.

Frequently asked questions
About the Sitemap Finder & Validator.
01
Do I need a sitemap?
Small, well-linked sites can do without, but a sitemap helps search engines find new and updated pages sooner.
02
Does a sitemap get pages indexed?
No. It helps Google find pages; whether they are indexed depends on the pages themselves.
03
Why shouldn’t it list redirects?
A sitemap says “these are my pages”. Redirects and errors waste crawling and blur that signal.
04
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
Up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites use a sitemap index that lists several files.
05
Why do you check only a sample?
To stay fast and polite to your server. The Website Audit crawls far more pages.
06
Is it free?
Yes. No account is needed. We limit how often one visitor can run checks so the tools stay fast for everyone.
