What does the free Meta Tag Checker analyze?

  1. 1

    Title tag

One title, specific to the page. Google cuts titles by width — about 600 px, often 50–60 characters.

  2. 2

    Meta description

A short summary that can become your snippet. Not a ranking factor, but it decides many clicks; about 120–160 characters.

  3. 3

    Canonical

One absolute URL naming the main version of the page. A canonical pointing elsewhere asks Google to index that other URL.

  4. 4

    Robots meta and X-Robots-Tag

noindex keeps the page out of search results; nofollow asks crawlers not to follow its links.

  5. 5

    Viewport, language and charset

The mobile viewport, the html lang attribute and the character encoding — small tags that phones, browsers and screen readers rely on.

  6. 6

    H1, Open Graph and icon

One main heading, og:title and og:image for shared links, and a site icon for search results.

How to write good meta tags

  1. 1

    One specific title per page

Main topic first, brand last, every page different. SERP Snippet Preview →

  2. 2

A description that earns the click

Say who the page is for and what they get, in one or two sentences.

  3. 3

    Canonical to itself

The main version points to itself; copies and filtered views point to it.

  4. 4

    noindex only on purpose

Use it for thank-you pages or internal search — and remove it from staging settings at launch.

  5. 5

    Social tags for shared links

    og:title, og:description and a 1200 × 630 og:image. Open Graph Preview →

How to interpret your results

ISSUE
A clear fault that usually deserves a fix, e.g. a missing title or a non-200 status.
WARNING
May be a problem depending on the page, e.g. a missing description or canonical, or a long title.
PASS
Checked and looks fine.
NOT CHECKED
Not part of this check, or blocked by the site. The report says which — it is never counted as a fault.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

About the Meta Tag Checker.

01

Which tags matter most?

The title and meta description shape how your page appears in search; canonical and robots decide which URL is indexed at all.

02

Is the meta description a ranking factor?

No. Google doesn’t use it for ranking, but it often shows it as the snippet, so a clear description can earn more clicks.

03

Why does Google show a different title?

Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords or don’t match the page. A short, specific title is kept more often.

04

How long should a title be?

There is no fixed limit. Google cuts titles at about 600 px on desktop, which is often 50–60 characters, so put the important words first.

05

Do meta keywords still matter?

No. Google ignores the meta keywords tag, so the checker doesn’t look for it.

06

Does it see tags added by JavaScript?

No. We read the HTML the server sends. Tags inserted by scripts after load aren’t seen here.

07

Is it free?

Yes. No account is needed. We limit how often one visitor can run checks so the tools stay fast for everyone.
