News creators and AI chatbots: Reuters 2026 report
The Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026 says social and video now beat news sites as the top way to reach news. What that means for community builders.
News now reaches most people through platforms, not publishers. That is the headline of the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026, published on 16 June 2026 and based on almost 100,000 interviews across 48 markets. For anyone running a community, newsletter or niche publication, it is a map of where attention went.

What did the Reuters Institute find?
The Digital News Report 2026 reports several shifts worth noting:
- Platforms overtook publishers. For the first time globally, social media and video networks are the most widely used way to reach news online, ahead of news organisations' own websites and apps.
- Creators matter. 27% of respondents get some news from news-focused individual creators or influencers. Counting creators of any type, the figure is 46%.
- Chatbots are small but growing. Weekly use of AI chatbots for news rose from 7% to 10%, with younger users more willing to experiment.
- Trust slid. It fell significantly in 29 of the 48 markets, and overall trust is at its lowest since the Institute began tracking it.
What does this mean for small publishers?
Distribution is rented. If most people meet news inside a feed or a video app, your own site is the destination, not the front door.
We read it two ways:
- Build somewhere you own. A mailing list, a community space or a site with its own archive survives algorithm changes. Social is the funnel, not the home.
- A person beats a masthead. The creator numbers say audiences follow faces and voices. A small publication with a named editor voice and a clear beat has a better shot than a faceless feed.
How should communities use the chatbot shift?
At 10% weekly use, chatbots are not replacing search for news. They are, however, one more place your reporting can be summarised without a click. Make your pages easy to quote: clear headlines, dates on time-sensitive facts, and a short answer at the top. Our SEO tools help you check those basics.
Is trust now a growth strategy?
It is the one thing a small outlet can beat a large one on. Cite primary sources, show your date and say what you do not know. When trust is falling across 29 markets, a plain correction note is a feature.
