AI Search for Competitor Research: A Founder's Workflow
Use AI search for competitor research without trusting made-up facts. A six-step founder workflow with prompts, a verification habit and a simple output table.
AI search is fast at the first pass of competitor research: it finds who is out there, how they describe themselves and what customers complain about. It is bad at being the final word. Use it to build a list and a set of questions, then verify every fact that matters on the competitor's own pages.
Here is a six-step workflow that takes about an hour.
How do you find competitors with AI search?
Do not ask "who are my competitors?". Ask from the customer's side.
Search by the problem
Prompt: "What do small teams use to [job to be done]? Include paid tools, free tools and spreadsheets. Give links."
The spreadsheet answer is useful. Your real competitor is often a habit, not a product.
Search by alternatives
Prompt: "What are alternatives to [known competitor], and why do people switch?" This surfaces reasons, which beat names.
Collect 8 to 12 candidates. Open each link yourself. Drop anything that is dead, a parked domain or a different product.
How do you check what the AI told you?
Treat each claim as a lead, not a fact.
- Prices: open the pricing page and copy the numbers with the date you saw them.
- Features: check the docs or changelog, not the marketing page.
- Customers and reviews: read a handful of real reviews. Look for repeated complaints, not single rants.
- Dates: if the answer says "recently", find the date.

A rule we use: if a number or a quote cannot be traced to a page you opened, it does not go into your notes.
What should the output look like?
Keep it to one table, one row per competitor:
| Competitor | Who it is for | Price (date seen) | Stands out for | Weak spot |
|---|
Add a final column for "what we'd do differently". That column is the point of the exercise.
Can AI help with customer interviews too?
Yes, as a note taker. ChatGPT's release notes say paid plans can upload audio for transcripts and summaries as of October 2026, with a warning that transcripts may contain errors. If you record a customer call, check names, numbers and quotes against the audio before they land in a deck.
Ask for the summary in two parts: what the customer said, and what the tool inferred. Keep only the first.
Where do you find competitors AI search misses?
New and small products rarely show up in AI answers. Browse a product directory such as Discover, check the TOP leaderboard, and look at launch platforms in the Outreach opportunities. Our AI Apps & Assistants hub covers this category specifically.
FAQ
Is AI search accurate enough for competitor research?
It is accurate enough to produce leads and often wrong on details such as prices and features. Verify anything you will act on.
Which AI search tool should I use?
Use whichever shows its sources clearly. The ability to click through to the original page matters more than the brand.
How often should I repeat this?
Every quarter, or when a competitor announces a pricing or product change.
Should I copy competitor positioning?
No. Use it to find gaps. If everyone says "all-in-one", say something specific.
Next step: pick your top three competitors today and fill one row each, with only facts you opened yourself.
