Connect Woodander to Claude Code
Add the Woodander MCP server to Claude Code with one command, check that it works, and try your first prompts.
Claude Code can talk to remote MCP servers over HTTP. Woodander is one command away.
You need a token first. If you do not have one, read Get a token.
Add the server #
Run this in your terminal, replacing <token> with your token:
claude mcp add --transport http woodander https://woodander.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <token>"You can also copy a ready-made version of this command from Settings → API & MCP in your Workspace.
The command stores the server under the name woodander. The token goes in the Authorization header, so keep your shell history and dotfiles private.
Check that it works #
List your servers:
claude mcp listwoodander should be there. Then start Claude Code and ask:
Call whoami on Woodander and tell me my plan and what this token can do.You should get your plan, your plan limits, and the token's name and scopes. If you get a 401, the token is wrong, expired or revoked. If you get a 403, see Limits and errors.
First prompts to try #
Start with reads. They are safe and show you what is there.
List my sites on Woodander and tell me which ones have Search Console connected.Show my Search Console summary for the last 28 days for example.com, and tell me
what changed compared with the previous period.Run the Woodander seo_review prompt for example.com.The last one uses the seo_review prompt that the MCP server provides. It tells the assistant which tools to call for a weekly SEO review. More ideas on the recipes page.
What your assistant sees #
Besides tools, the server exposes resources for the latest audit and SEO summary per site, and the seo_review prompt. Your client decides how to show them.
Remove or replace the server #
To change the token, remove the server and add it again:
claude mcp remove woodanderThen run the add command with the new token. Revoke the old token in Settings so it cannot be used anymore.
Tips #
- Give the token only the scopes you need. A reading token is enough for most reviews.
- Write scopes plus Manual mode is a good start: your assistant can propose, and nothing changes until you approve. See Modes and approvals.
- Claude Code can also edit your site's code. A nice pattern is: Woodander finds the problem, Claude Code fixes it in your repo.
Next step #
Run the seo_review prompt on your own site and read the answer.
